Night and day, you are the one, as Cole Porter wrote in his timeless classic song.
However, for many of us girls, the transition of taking an outfit from day to night can be a tricky one. With the party season fully underway, I thought I would give you a few tips to help.
Make it simple. A smart black suit with a jacket can easily be transformed into an evening classic by replacing a work top with something glitzy. Take off the jacket, add a sequinned or sparkly top and the suit will be almost unrecognisable.
Similarly, a classic black dress can be invaluable for the dress up/dress down situation. You only have to think of someone like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to see how effective the LBD can be.
It’s often difficult to get the balance right with day to night make up. Too much during the day, and you could look like a drag queen. Too little in the evening, and you could look washed out and ill.
Keep it soft and neutral during the day, but for the evening, vamp it up. It is normally best to choose one feature and make this your focus. For example, if you have fabulous eyes, emphasise them. Keep the lips softer though so they are not in competition. By contrast, if you wish to opt for a Marilyn Munroe style luscious red pout, then keep the eyes much more simple.
Choosing the right tone of makeup for your skin and hair type is imperative and for those of us who are not sure what suits us best, ask the experts! Jane Fardon is one such lady who helps us ladies look our best, no matter what the occasion.
Here’s a video which gives you some helpful tips on how to achieve the smokey-eyed look:
What simpler way of changing the look of any outfit than with accessories!
Swap the daytime winter-wool scarf for a luxurious pure silk scarf for instant Hollywood glamour. Why not add a glitzy belt to get you in the party spirit. Take off those boring, practical work shoes and get out your best shoes. These could have a fabulous heel, or be a pretty sparkling pump – whatever you choose, make sure it makes you feel fabulous!
Choice of jewellery is such a personal issue, but there are a few basic guidelines that will help you if you don’t know whether to flaunt your inner Liz Taylor or to be more reserved like Kate Middleton!
Daytime jewellery is often sensibly reserved. Why not swap this for something more fabulously full-on but be careful not to overdo things as there is a balance to be struck. If you choose showgirl style earrings, then stay away from a necklace as it could be competition. Instead, opt for a bold bracelet.
Drop earrings are the natural choice for evenings. Choose a small drop earring for a more subtle look and team it with a matching necklace and bracelet if you wish to emphasise the style more.
For a strapless dress, a well-chosen necklace can be invaluable in breaking the bareness. Similarly a drop earring can work in the same way.
The Christmas party is the time to show your fun side – have fun and enjoy yourself. But, remember, you will have to face everyone again in the morning, so don’t do anything you could regret!
