The third Sunday in June is the official date for celebrating Father’s Day. We’ve gathered together our five favourite fun facts ahead of this year’s celebrations on 18th June.
Thank you America!
Yes, Father’s Day is an American creation! It is widely believed that in 1909 Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mothering Sunday sermon when she decided she wanted to honour her father in a similar way. Her father was a civil war veteran who bought up six children after his wife died. On 19th June the following year, Sonora’s home town of Spokane, Washington, celebrated its first Father’s Day.
In 1966 President Linden Johnson decided that the third Sunday in June should be proclaimed as Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed into law for permanent recognition.
You’re never too old!
The worlds oldest dad is believed to be Indian born Ramjit Raghav. He was reportedly aged 94 when he had his first child, with a second child being born when he was 96. He is a strict vegetarian and puts his good health – and stamina – down to a healthy diet!
The world record for having the most number of children goes to the first wife of Feodore Vassilyev (1707-1782). She gave birth to 16 pairs or twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets. That’s an amazing total of 69 children to just one couple!
I’m exhausted just thinking about it!
Play your cards right
According to Hallmark, Father’s Day is the fourth largest card-sending occasion with over 72 million cards being sent each year. According to their statistics, 50% of these cards are purchased for fathers, but nearly 20% are given to husbands.
But it doesn’t stop there. You can even buy cards from you pets. Cats, dogs, fish – whatever the pet, there is a card out there!
Oldest Celebrity Dads
Age seems to hold no barrier for celebrity dads. Hollywood has had it’s fair share of over 60’s Dads. Take, for example, Clint Eastwood. He was 66 when he had his seventh child, Morgan. Robert De Niro was 68 when his daughter, Helen Grace, was born. But why stop in your 60’s? Media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, was 72 when his daughter Chloe was born in 2003.
Perhaps most famously, Charlie Chaplin holds the Hollywood Crown for older dads. He was 73 when his wife, 36 years his junior, gave birth to their son, Christopher James in 1962.
