One of our most popular styles is the starfish. We just love it. But did you know how amazing starfish actually are? Here are our top fun facts about starfish!
How many arms does a starfish have?
Five, right? Well, sometimes. In fact, there are around 1,600 different types of starfish and although many have the traditional five arms, some have as many as 50! If attacked, some starfish are able to shed an arm to escape. Even more amazing, it is possible for a starfish to regenerate lost arms, although it can take up to a year.
Fish? What Fish?
Starfish are not fish at all! Obvious when you think about it, but the name just assumes they are related in some way. However, starfish are actually from the same sea family as sea-urchins and sand dollars. Did you also know that they have no blood and no brain? They do, however, come is a glorious rainbow of colours!
Mind your manners!
The digestive system of a starfish resembles something from an Alien movie! A starfish attaches its body to its prey, such as clams and oysters, using tiny suction cups. Then, from out of its mouth it sends it’s stomach! Enzymes help it to digest its food and once it has, the stomach retracts back into its body. Now that sounds pretty sci-fi to me!
Starfish are solitary creatures and spend a large amount of time on their own. They do sometimes group together to feed and to breed. Now breeding, that’s something worthy of a mention on its own…!
So, how do starfish breed?
Well, it depends. Some species spawn. With their reproductive organs in their arms (where else?), they group together and the males release the sperm, whilst the females release the eggs. The two hopefully meet somewhere in the salty water that the starfish must have in order to live. But there is another way of reproducing for some species.
Remember the fact that they can shed an arm? Well, some species reproduce asexually by removing an arm, along with part of the central disc of the body, and this removed piece grows into a new starfish!
